About the Greater Washington Partnership
Mission

The Greater Washington Partnership for Palliative and End-of-Life Care
works to bring families, providers, health professionals, consumers and
the public together to improve care for patients and families coping with
advanced illness and end-of-life issues.

History

The Greater Washington Partnership was created in 1998 as the DC
Partnership for End-of-Life Care.  As the recipient of a multi-year grant
from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the coalition grew to more
than one hundred people from fifty health care organizations and the
community. Now in its tenth year and renamed the Greater Washington
Partnership for Palliative and End-of-Life Care, the organization has
developed a focused ability to work through the barriers and challenges to
comprehensive care for people facing advanced illnesses. The
Partnership is presently working with the DC Cancer Consortium to
achieve the goals for palliative care outlined in the
DC Cancer Control
Plan
.

Since its inception, the Partnership has celebrated many
accomplishments:

Education and training. The Professional Education Committee
has trained more than 1,500 health care professionals through
conferences, trainings and other programs focused on reaching
interdisciplinary audiences, including End of Life Nursing Education
Consortium (ELNEC) training.  The Public Education Committee
has led outreach programs and seminars that have reached more
than 2,000 people.

Changing health care policy.  In collaboration with the DC
Department of Health, the Public Policy Committee oversaw the
passage of the District's Emergency Medical Services Non-
Resuscitation Procedures Act, also known as the Comfort Care Act,
ensuring that people's wishes at the end of life are respected by
health care providers.  The Professional Education Committee is
assisting in the implementation of the Comfort Care Act by
coordinating trainings for health care professionals on the legislation.

Promoting high-quality palliative care.  The Awards Committee
coordinated the first, second, and third annual CareFirst BlueCross
BlueShield Palliative Care Awards in 2006, 2007, and 2008 to honor
and promote outstanding new and established local palliative care
programs.  In 2007 and 2008, the Award for Media Excellence
recognized media stories that significantly increased popular
understanding of palliative care in the DC area.
