Glossary
Palliative Care--As defined by the World Health Organization, patients and their families, facing the problems associated with life- threatening illness, through the prevention and relief from suffering, by means of early identification, impeccable assessment, treatment of pain and other problems physical, psychosocial, and spiritual.
Patients’ Bill of Rights--Patients have both rights and responsibilities when it comes to their health and the health care services they receive. The Patients’ Bill of Rights and Responsibilities was developed through the work of the Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Health Care Industry appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1997. Many health plans, including all of the plans sponsored by the Federal government, have adopted the general principles found in the Patients’ Bill of Rights.
