CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Palliative Care Awards
The Greater Washington Partnership for Palliative and End-of-Life Care has coordinated the annual CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Palliative Care Awards since their establishment in 2006. In 2006, 2007, and 2008 the Outstanding and New Palliative Care Awards recognized palliative care service providers throughout the Greater Metropolitan area. In 2007 and 2008, the Award for Media Excellence honored media coverage that substantially increased awareness of palliative care in our community.

The CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Palliative Care Awards are given in three categories:
The CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Outstanding Palliative Care Award is for well-established programs in existence for more than five years.One first place cash award of $5,000 will be given.
The CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield New Palliative Care Award is for programs in existence from six months through five years.One first place cash award of $4,000 will be given.
The CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Award for Media Excellence is for a media story published via print, radio, television, or any other media format since January 1, 2008. One first place cash award of $1,000 will be given.
The Outstanding and the New Palliative Care Awards are given to programs in the Washington Metropolitan area that best meet the following criteria:
The program provides direct care, is multi-disciplinary and acknowledges the National Palliative Care Guidelines.
The program has a defined mission and/or charge, designated leadership and institutional support.
A family-centered teaching component is included; additional educational components for the institution and/or community are a plus.
There are established linkages to other services in the community.
Data is reported in a way that supports program efficacy.
Future goals are clearly stated and a plan is in place to meet these goals.
The program strives to raise the standard for palliative care and provides a model for possible emulation.
The program is based in the Greater Washington metropolitan area, including Northern Virginia (Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and Prince William County); Washington, DC; suburban Maryland (Montgomery County, Prince George's County).
The Award for Media Excellence is given to media stories published in 2008 in the Greater Metropolitan area that best meet the following criteria:
Entry displays creativity and originality, as well as clarity and accuracy in reporting on palliative and/or end-of-life care.
Entry reveals considerable depth and breadth of knowledge of palliative or end-of-life care and has enhanced public awareness of palliative or end-of-life care in the Washington Metropolitan area.
The entry must come from an individual or organization based in the Washington Metropolitan area, including Northern Virginia (Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and Prince William County); Washington, DC; and suburban Maryland (Montgomery County, Prince George's County).
